Smartwings adds twelfth new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to its fleet

Smartwings airline company has expanded its fleet with another new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This is the second new aircraft of this type that Smartwings has received within a month ahead of the upcoming summer season. Its existing fleet of 48 aircraft is expected to grow by another 4 by June.

The new modern aircraft in Smartwings colors with the registration mark OK-SWL landed at Václav Havel Airport on February 22 in the morning after completing a ten-and-a-half-hour direct flight from Seattle, USA. This is the twelfth aircraft of this type in Smartwings’ fleet. The first Boeing 737 MAX 8 joined the fleet at the end of January 2018. The company operates this aircraft type in two configurations: full economy with 189 seats and a two-class configuration with 18 seats in business class and 150 seats in economy class.

Smartwings deploys 737 MAX aircraft mainly on long-haul flights, e.g., to the Canary Islands, UAE (Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah), Oman (Salalah, Muscat), Qatar (Doha), Bahrain, Cape Verde, etc. Smartwings became the first airline in the world to land this type of aircraft in Antarctica in January 2022. Since then, Smartwings has made 15 landings there and regularly transports members of the Norwegian Polar Institute to Antarctica.

This year, Smartwings Group expects another strong summer season with an increase in the number of passengers. Under the 2025 summer schedule, it will offer direct flights from six Czech airports to 80 destinations. Smartwings Group will operate flights not only from the Czech Republic, but also from Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary during the summer season.

Last year, Smartwings Group transported 8.3 million passengers. Smartwings carried 6.5 million passengers on scheduled and charter flights, up 20.1% year-on-year. The company carried another 1.85 million passengers on board its aircraft on behalf of other carriers. The total number of flights in 2024 increased to 53,338. Smartwings aircraft landed at 318 airports around the world last year.
